A few years ago, when I was still teaching Art in High School, I joined a group of artists that worked from the model on Monday and Thursday nights.  On Monday evening the model was bare and on Thursday clothed.  So, on Thursday evening we usually had younger models in all kinds of interesting dress and unconventional hairdos.  This young person had “Such Interesting Hair”.

You will notice from my painting that there are no pencil marks. I rarely draw with a pencil --- it is tooo slow!  Direct painting suits my personality; I am always in a hurry!  GET DONE is my motto.

While teaching HS art, I encouraged direct painting otherwise the students wore their erasers to nubs. I see that with adult artists too, often their paintings are very stiff and over-worked.  They lack freshness and spontaneity.  In case you did not know, even with watercolor there are methods to cover mistakes.  Although I think mistakes make for a more interesting work.  Just call it exaggeration or some other like term. 

I painted “Such Interesting Hair” in probably 15 or 20 minutes.  How is that possible?  It took decades of training my eye and hand to achieve this level of confidence and ability.
