There was a time this past year when the virus and the upcoming election seemed to be tearing the entire country apart. I tried to stay calm during this chaos while reevaluating my allegiance to my country. I am a child of immigrants from Lithuania and like my parents before me, I genuinely love America.
In my youth, I heard the firsthand stories of the horrors of socialism and communism. At the time when my Dad, and two of his brothers came to this country, Russia was forcibly conscripting all the young men into their army. So, the three brothers escaped to Poland and through ingenuity and hard work found a ship and passage to America.
There was no free lunch when they arrived in Baltimore. Immigrants had to have a sponsor who would shelter and help them assimilate into the new country. Learning English was a necessity, because finding jobs was a priority. Eventually, my Mom and Dad met and married. They became citizens and moved to the Kettle Moraine Glacier area in Wisconsin because it reminded them of Lithuania. There they built a business and raised six children. They lived the American Dream.
Throughout the pandemonium of 2020, I took this time to create another series of Angels. For me, painting is a time of contemplation and prayer. I know my Guardian Angel has gotten me over many rough patches through the years. During my career, I have painted 100's of angels, many choirs of them. The great thing about angels is that no one really knows what they look like, so these are my interpretation -- big feet and all. Today I am highlighting one in particular…Angel & God Bless America.
This is the second version of Angel & God Bless America. Version one is no longer available as an original on the website.
