A City on a Hill Cannot be Hidden…

There are many places to find inspiration for a new painting. The Bible has rich imagery in its text. A phrase like "You are the Light of the World. A City Built on a Hill Cannot Be Hidden" (Matthew 5:14) can fire up my imagination. Where was this city on a hill? Was it built on a hill, so it was in plain sight or was it advantageous to be up high to avoid a surprise attack?

In my travels to other countries, I have seen walled cities and fortresses on the distant hills. It is remarkable to think of the manual labor necessary to build these marvels without the machines and technology that we have now. I never cease to wonder about the people who called these awe-inspiring places home. 

It is exciting to put the brush to paper and build that imaginary city spotlighted by the sun. I do not rely on photos to build my imagery; it comes from my collection of memories from past travels, stories I have heard and a vivid imagination.  I hope you enjoy visiting my City on a Hill.
