About Me

Hi World!

I'M Rosalie Waranius Vass

It has been mentioned in many articles about me that once you've seen one of my paintings you will always recognize my work. You may not know my name but the motifs and methods I use will never be confused with that of anyone else. I have had a long art career and my paintings have been shown in galleries, universities, libraries and museums across the United States and other countries. I am proficient in many medias including: watercolor, oil paint, drawing and print making. My imagination seems never to run dry so I never run out of subject matter. Sometimes, just a comment from someone will inspire a painting. A friend told me about her trip out West in the mountains. She saw a flock of sheep down in a valley and birds were walking around on the backs of the sheep. The challenge in this painting was how to paint a valley in the mountains. The end result is a large painting called A Bird on My Back, which you can view on this website.

I grew up in the Kettle Moraine area of Wisconsin. The small towns, farms, forests, lakes and streams provided many ideas and great subject matter for my future as an artist. I attended a private high school for quality art classes and went on to study at Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a degree in Fine Art and Art Education. I taught art in public and private schools for fourteen years and now paint and exhibit full time.

My most popular paintings are layered watercolor on watercolor paper. The texture of the paper will dictate the way the paint is applied. Indian Village paper is very thick and textured so that the application of the paint is a slower process and will result in less detail. Painting on D'Arches hot press paper is easier because the paint flows faster and I can paint many layers quickly. Sometimes the direction of the paint flow will dictate the start of the composition. Prisma Color pencil scribbles add texture, direction and highlights. Sewn on borders and other additions add dimension and interest.

I have had an exciting art career. One of my special honors took place in 1986 when I received signature status in the National Watercolor Society. Since then, I have been in NWS shows many times in California. A big highlight came some years later when I entered two International shows through the NWS, with thousands of other world wide applicants.  I had two paintings chosen for exhibition. One show was the International NWS Biennial and the other was the International NWS Small Image Exchange. Both shows were held in China at the Shenzhen Museum. One painting was a prize winner and was highlighted by the curator of the exhibition in the extensive show catalog.

I have also had many one person shows in Museums, Libraries, University Galleries throughout the United States.  I regularly participate in competitive art shows, and have won numerous honors and awards. You can find my paintings in many fine business and personal collections.  I'm especially happy that my paintings have been included in many hospital settings.  I do believe that art heals.

I enjoy painting commissioned pieces. These are a great challenge for any artist but I find creating art for a particular space both rewarding and frustrating and always appreciate the honor. My commissioned paintings can be found in many public buildings throughout the US.

Thank you for exploring my website.  I hope you enjoy your journey through my paintings. I am always looking for a happy home for each of them.
